Symptom
Attack
One
is afraid of having a panic attack or symptom attack.
Symptom attacks can be stimulated by places, situations,
sights, sounds, odors, ideas, or things, and are avoided
due to fear of an unpleasant physical symptom. Fear
of panic attacks have similar feared situations and
are also avoided.
Panic
Disorders
A
panic attack is a sudden rush of fear. This fear is
a sudden rush of adrenalin into the blood stream and
serves to prepare the body for "flight or fight".
Rapid heartbeat, increased breathing or difficulty breathing,
sweating, dilated pupils, intense focus, and other symptoms
accompany an intense fear that something catastrophic
(like dying or
losing control) is about to happen.
Agoraphobia
A
person's fear of these attacks can lead him or her to
avoid any situation that might trigger one. For example,
the person may avoid driving, crowds, being alone, or
leaving the house. When panic attacks lead to this sort
of persistent avoidance, the condition is known as agoraphobia.
Fear
of a symptom attack such as vomiting, fainting, headaches,
loss of bowel or bladder control, rapid heart beat,
choking, or any physical sensation that leads to panic
symptoms are also treated at the Anxiety Disorders Center.
Main
treatment components aim at four primary fears:
-
External Danger Signals
-
Internal Danger Signals
-
Feared Symptom Attack
- Feared
Catastrophe
