Hoarding Disorder (HD) involves persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions due to a perceived need to save the items and significant distress associated with discarding them. Often, people with HD devote substantial time to acquiring non-essential objects and may acquire objects through a variety of means (e.g., responding to sales, frequenting flea markets, “dumpster diving,” mailings, picking up stray animals, etc.).
If left unchecked, HD can lead to unsafe or unlivable home environments, isolation, and depression. HD sufferers often fail to acknowledge the severity of the problem, often causing family concern and conflict.
