Thank you for your interest in The Eating Disorders Program at St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute. Our goal is to provide accessible and affordable treatment for individuals of all ages based on best practice evidence based methodology. We work with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, Binge Eating and eating disordered behavior associated with other diagnoses. We also greatly benefit from having the Anxiety Disorder Program at the Institute so that we are able to coordinate treatment when severe anxiety and eating disorders co-occur.

Our Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorders Program (ED-IOP) is for adults and adolescents, age 13 and over. We conduct evaluations of individuals with complex and more severe presentations to help determine the most effective level of treatment. We provide individualized treatment within a structured, supportive model that promotes supervised practice and generalization of adaptive coping skills into daily life. We welcome referrals from hospitals and residential facilities, and seek to work collaboratively with physicians, mental health providers and school personnel associated with ongoing treatment of clients in their communities. We provide weekly treatment updates to involved community professionals for all IOP clients.

Our program offers a 6 and 4 day IOP, which consists of a minimum of three hours of psychotherapy groups, including a therapeutic meal. Although our program has an emphasis in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we also draw on Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Family Systems Model of treatment. Upon admission to the program, each client receives instruction in the cognitive behavioral model for anxiety applied to eating disorders and develops an exposure hierarchy, which encourages a systematic, planned approach to behavior change. Each client is also scheduled to see a dietitian within the first few days in order to develop a meal plan and will meet for follow-up sessions according to their needs. They will also receive individual therapy sessions and weekly individual feedback on their progress. Family therapy is an important component of the IOP and is provided through a Multi-Family Group, as well as individual family sessions. Throughout treatment, we focus on discharge planning. We offer two free Relapse Prevention groups, both for individuals and families.

For clients who attend our program from outside the St. Louis area, we have arranged affordable room and board at Haven House, located approximately 7 miles down the road from our offices.

Our Outpatient Eating Disorders Program is appropriate for clients whose symptoms do not meet criteria for the ED-IOP. We offer comprehensive psychological assessments, psychological testing, psychiatric evaluations, nutritional counseling, and expressive therapy as well as individual and family therapy. We currently conduct a weekly therapy group for Compulsive Eating. We offer two free outpatient Relapse Prevention groups, both for individuals and families.
