“FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS FAT TALK”
Students at Eight Area Campuses Will Pledge to Stop FAT TALK!

October 19 to 23, 2009 will be the 2nd national FAT TALK FREE WEEK and the 1st in the St. Louis area.  College students will participate in national FAT TALK FREE WEEK by taking this pledge:

Today I promise to eliminate FAT TALK
from conversations with my friends, my family and myself.

Starting now, I will strive for a "healthy ideal,"
which I know looks different for every woman,
and focuses on HEALTH, not weight or size.

I will celebrate the things about myself
and the women in my life that have
nothing to do with how we look.

I decide to end Fat Talk NOW!

This is a public awareness effort to draw attention to the damaging impact of the “thin ideal” on women’s self-esteem. Seeing first hand how these negative thoughts contribute to eating disorders, the clinicians in the Eating Disorders Program at St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute invited local colleges and universities to participate.  The hope is that students joining this national effort may become “body activists” and change the way they think and talk about their bodies, and as a result, reduce eating disorder behaviors.

Fat Talk Free Week was created by the Reflections Program of Tri Delta sorority.  More information will be available at www.bodyimageprogram.org including a link to a new video campaign to be released October 19, 2009 and an opportunity for women to sign the pledge on-line.
