MENTAL HEALTH PRACTICUM AT SAINT LOUIS BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE INSTITUTE

Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute (SLBMI) offers a clinical practicum in mental health. Students are assigned to the Intermediate Care Program (ICP), a nationally recognized program offering multidisciplinary care featuring state-of-the-art, intensive cognitive and behavioral treatments for patients with complex or refractory disorders. Students will typically have the opportunity to work with a variety of problems, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder and agoraphobia, social phobia, trauma-related disorders, depression, and others.

Qualifications : Students must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in clinical or counseling psychology, clinical social work, or other mental health discipline.

Number of Positions: 3-4

Hours and Schedule : Students are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week and may work up to 40 hours per week depending on availability of clinical experiences at the Institute. Attempts are made to devise schedules that accommodate each students additional academic commitments.

Starting/Ending Dates : Practica are offered in two sessions. The regular session coincides with the academic year, typically beginning September 1 st and ending May 31 st . A summer session is also offered beginning June 1 st and ending August 31 st . The exact starting and ending dates may vary somewhat according to the student's academic schedule.

Clinical Responsibilities of the Student : Students will administer psychological interventions under the direction of licensed psychologist and other licensed mental health professional. In addition, students may co-lead groups therapy, attend and participate in group supervision and clinical rounds, and conduct intake screenings. Students are also invited to attend all continuing education programs provided at the Institute.

Supervision : All students will receive one to two hours per week of group supervision by a licensed psychologist. Regularly scheduled individual supervision is typically provided by postdoctoral fellows in clinical psychology. The hours and frequency of supervision depends upon the number of hours involved in the student's practicum. Students will also receive input and supervision from a multidisciplinary team of professional on a case-by-case basis.

Funding : Students are not provided a stipend by the Institute. Occasionally, students have been able to obtain outside funding.

Research Opportunities : The practicum is a clinical experience and research is not required. However, opportunities are available for participation in research for those who are interested.
