About the
Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute
The Saint Louis
Behavioral Medicine Institute integrates knowledge from the
behavioral and medical sciences to provide comprehensive
treatment for a wide range of health problems. Treatment
approaches include cognitive and behavioral therapies,
biofeedback, and relaxation training. Treatment is provided
in individual or group formats. Since 1983, we have been
working with many types of patients from those with general
counseling needs to patients requiring specialized
multidisciplinary care.
Our multidisciplinary
teams (including physicians, psychologists, nurses, physical
therapists, social workers, marriage and family therapists,
spiritual directors, technicians, and other professionals)
collaborate both as a team and with referring clinicians and
organizations. Because of this, we have the ability to
assess each patient and tailor the most effective treatment
plan.
As the Division of
Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Community and
Family Medicine at Saint Louis University School of
Medicine, we have experience in working closely with primary
medicine practitioners. In addition to treating
psychological and behavioral problems, we have a strong
interest in prevention, treatment compliance, and the
management of pain and physical illness. These are areas of
expertise that can benefit both patients and the healthcare
system as a whole. By learning to change behavior, patients
can, in many instances, avoid more costly medical and
surgical treatments, reduce future outpatient visits, gain
greater control over their lives, and maximize life
satisfaction.
The Institute not only
brings diversity of method and talent to each problem, but
also a continuum of care. By tailoring individual treatment
plans and monitoring progress, the resource mix may change
as the patient advances. This individualized approach to
treatment is enhanced by our ability to offer various levels
of care.
Many practitioners at the
Institute are trained in sensitivity to the religious and
spiritual aspects of psychological and medical care. These
issues are addressed in the context of the client's own
faith, and in collaboration (when necessary) with religious
professionals of the client's faith community. We speak of
this work as our commitment to provide 'psychological care
for people of faith.'
The Institute is an
academic affiliate of Saint Louis University Health Sciences
Center. Our faculty and staff support the academic mission
of the University in many ways. They are frequent
contributors to professional journals and at professional
meetings. They participate in the advanced training of
family practice residents, psychologists, social workers,
and medical students.
