Complex
Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome has also been known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), causalgia, Sudeck's Atrophy and Shoulder-Hand Syndrome. This condition involves abnormalities of the sympathetic nervous system, which controls blood flow and sweat glands (temperature). CRPS usually occurs ages 40-60, but it can affect children and the elderly; it is more common in women than men. Onset might occur after even mild injury to nerves, bones or joints; or from surgery, infections, cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attack or from the use of certain medications. Some people develop it without any recognizable cause.
Proper treatment in the first stage may prevent progression into the final two stages. Stage 1 may last weeks or months with localized swelling, pain, tenderness and temperature sensitivity. In Stage 2, temperature sensitivity, aching or burning pain and swelling persist; pain spreads in extremities and may produce painful muscle spasms; the area becomes pale or waxy with bone thinning. In Stage 3, permanent changes may include drawn skin, tight/wasted muscles and tissue, reduced limb function and joint movement.
Treatment may include pain relievers, NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, cortisone, sympathetic blocks, biofeedback, relaxation therapy, TENS stimulation and physical therapy.
