Diet Counseling

Diet Counseling

Counseling and education help people understand and identify the triggers for headaches and factors that cause pain to increase or decrease. Chronic unremitting pain problems may lead to depression, anxiety, and work problems. Training can help minimize the impact of these factors.

Diet counseling may play a very important role in headache pain management for two reasons:

  • A poor diet is a very common and frequently overlooked factor of headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and fibromyalgia;

  • A poor diet can adversely affect one’s ability to cope with any pain by changing one’s mood, sensitivity to pain, and sense of well being.

Diet is an important part of the treatment for headaches and pain management. Certain foods may be triggers for headaches and foods with high sugar content can cause hyper/hypo glycemic rebound headaches. Many times, the foods you eat can aggravate and worsen your symptoms. By knowing which foods may be aggravating your illness, you can avoid some symptoms before they start. The first step is to understand your eating habits and lifestyle by keeping a food diary, thereby closely examining what you eat and how you feel later.

To determine if foods may be a trigger for your headaches, download this food diary to complete and take to your medical evaluation appointment.

Food Diary

The best way to get to know yourself and your personal habits is to keep a food diary for 3-7 days.  Record what you eat, and how much of each food, liquid and condiment you consume; also, indicate when you take your medications, how you feel when you eat, where you eat, with whom you eat, and any symptoms you notice at meal time, or develop after eating. All this information will be reviewed with you by your treatment team, looking for any patterns or causes for your symptoms.  Be sure to include any foods that you avoid or cannot eat because of their effect on you.

Diet is by no means the only way to control your pain. By incorporating diet, medication, biofeedback-assisted relaxation training plus psychological counseling into a healthy lifestyle, along with correction of musculoskeletal problems and pain management strategies taught in physical therapy, pain symptoms can be more effectively managed.
