Rebound Headache Pain
Headache-prone individuals frequently find themselves
taking over-the-counter or prescription medicines more
often and/or in higher dosages in an attempt to control
headaches. Unfortunately, this can produce a physiologic
dependence on these meds, causing the person to
experience headaches when they don’t take the
symptomatic medicines regularly. At this point,
headaches may become poorly responsive to preventative
medication.
In cases like this the symptomatic medication may need
to be stopped, or doses significantly decreased, in
order to begin controlling the headaches; other
adjustments in medication use also may be indicated.
Biobehavioral therapy and physical therapy can identify
contributory problems in environment, posture,
mechanics, and trigger points, and teach non-medication
strategies to control headaches.
