Fibromyalgia (fibrositis) / Myofascial Pain

The term “Myofascial Pain” refers to pain that originates in muscles (“myo”) and the connective tissues within the body (“fascia’).  Formerly known as fibrositis, Fibromyalgia is a chronic painful myofascial condition causing stiffness, trigger points and tenderness in muscles, tendons, and joints all over the body. It is also characterized by restless sleep, general fatigue, anxiety, depression and disturbances in bowel function. While fibromyalgia is one of the most common myofascial diseases, its cause is currently unknown. Despite significant pain levels, no deformity or damage to internal body organs occurs, since tissue inflammation is not present.

In the United States, approximately 2% of the population has fibromyalgia. Over 80% of those affected are women between the ages of 35 and 55, but fibromyalgia can also affect men, children, and the elderly. It is an arthritis-related autoimmune disease which responds best to a multi-disciplinary treatment approach; it can occur independently or with another disease, such as systemic lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.

A comprehensive medical evaluation and thorough history help the pain management team develop an appropriate plan of care for each client.  One medication, Lyrica, has been approved recently by the FDA for treatment of Fibromyalgia.  Physical Therapy can help improve body alignment, poor body mechanics, muscle weakness and overuse, and provide comforting modalities and manual work.  Clients who learn self-care strategies can use them successfully each day to reduce these painful spots, and gradually condition/strengthen their body to meet the demands of daily life.  Counseling provides an opportunity to address personal issues and concerns which may complicate the medical condition. The goal of all these interventions is to enhance the individual’s ability to cope, and improve their quality of life in family, social and work situations.
