Peripheral Neuropathy
There are many different types of peripheral neuropathy, with dozens of causes, each one requiring its own specific type of treatment. The most common type of peripheral neuropathy that we treat is diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Specific medications such as Cymbalta or Effexor are usually prescribed; other medications used range from NSAIDs to mild opioids. The patient will need to have his diabetic condition very closely controlled. Physical Therapy is important when there is weakness and muscular atrophy, to provide proper education, posture training, strengthening and muscle balancing to improve performance of daily activities. To better manage the pain, the patient will also receive specific education in pain management, psychotherapy and relaxation training.
