Repetitive Trauma Syndrome
Trauma may occur in any area of the body as a result of repeating the same movement or activity over and over throughout the day, for months or years on end. People who work long hours at computers and on assembly lines may cause specific injury to wrists, forearms, shoulders, feet, knees or backs because of their job or activity. Every worker is in danger of injuring job-specific areas of their bodies; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Epicondylitis and Rotator Cuff Syndrome are all examples of repetitive trauma overuse syndromes. Even leisure activities performed frequently and repetitively in an improper manner can cause injury − like computer games, bowling, golf, or weight-lifting.
A thorough physical examination and appropriate tests assess injury to the musculoskeletal system. Therapy includes rest, medication, biofeedback, physical therapy and possibly surgery. A Physical Therapist can provide musculoskeletal evaluation, proper biomechanics education, posture training, strengthening and muscle balancing for each specific job and situation.
