Management
Behavior therapy incorporates stress management training to identify each individual’s relevant stressors and personal responses. The goal of treatment is to help each client develop specific ways to apply stress management skills to their daily life. Because of the chronic nature of pain, a person’s ability to manage their condition effectively is important. Behavior therapy is useful in addressing with all issues that affect pain management.
Emotional stress can cause symptoms to worsen. Thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can make pain worse, keep the pain from decreasing, or contribute to return of pain symptoms.
Thoughts:
The way we think about and perceive pain has an effect on the pain itself. Some people feel helpless; others deny they have a problem, while some think of pain as "the enemy" to be defeated. Developing effective thought patterns is critical to managing chronic pain.
Feelings:
Common emotional reactions to pain include depression,
anxiety and anger, but usually one emotion dominates.
Learning ways to manage these powerful emotions can
have a tremendously positive effect on pain.
Behaviors:
The way we sit, stand, walk, reach, clean, sleep, play and work can cause or reduce pain. Many behaviors impact pain levels, especially "overdoing." Understanding what drives our behavioral patterns, and learning to respond in new ways, is helpful in managing pain levels.
