Vertigo & Balance Problems
Most causes of dizziness are not serious; they may quickly resolve on their own or are easily treated. However, dizziness or lightheadedness make you feel unsteady, like you might lose your balance or faint; vertigo makes you feeling like you or the room is spinning or moving.
Lightheadedness occurs when not enough blood gets to the brain, possibly due to low blood pressure or dehydration (especially with illness). Older people may experience lightheadedness when moving from lying to sitting, or sitting to standing; a physical therapist can instruct patients in exercises and transfer techniques that reduce these occurrences. Serious conditions that can lead to lightheadedness must be ruled out; these include heart problems, stroke, and conditions causing severe drop in blood pressure.
Vertigo that occurs with head movement is called benign positional vertigo, which can be treated by special exercises and physical therapy. Labyrinthitis is caused by a viral infection of the inner ear, so it usually follows a cold or flu. Meniere’s disease is another common inner ear problem that causes vertigo, loss of balance, ringing in the ears, and can lead to hearing loss. More rarely, vertigo or feeling unsteady could be a sign of stroke, multiple sclerosis, seizures, a brain tumor, or bleeding within the brain, but other symptoms will be present to aid the physician in making proper diagnosis.
