Mindfulness
In
a word, mindfulness is awareness. It is a type of meditation
directed at becoming more aware of internal experiences,
such as thoughts, feelings, beliefs, body sensations
as well as the external world, such as the physical
environment and one's body in relation to it. Mindfulness
involves bringing concentration and cultivating insight
into each moment of our lives. This approach helps the
individual shift from automatically "reacting"
to situations or problems to a way of "responding"
in a skillful, healthy way. The individual learns to
allow, accept, and be open to the inner pain and joys
of the present moment rather than engage in self-judgment,
distraction, multi-tasking, or avoidance. Mindfulness
practitioners can teach a given meditation strategy
in one session. For more in-depth training using mindfulness
to manage depression, anxiety, chronic stress, chronic
pain, or to prevent addiction relapse, structured 8-16
session mindfulness programs can be applied.
