General Psychological Services FAQs

How long will treatment take?

This is a very hard question to answer because it varies so much depending upon the particular problem and the life circumstances of the individual. The average number of sessions is between four and eight sessions. For more difficult conditions and situations, treatment can last more than a year. Most people begin to recognize benefit within a few sessions although, although it may take many more sessions to complete treatment.

What if I need drugs?

For some conditions, medication can be helpful. Generally, a combination of psychotherapy and medication will work best. If medication seems appropriate for you, your therapist will discuss how it might be helpful and then refer you to a physician who can prescribe it. This could be someone who works at the Institute, your own physician, or a specialist. Your therapist will work closely with whomever you choose to have prescribe your medication.
