Adrian J. Whitmire, M.Div., Ph.D.

Adrian J. Whitmire, M.Div, Ph.D.
Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Whitmire is licensed as a psychologist in both Missouri and Colorado. He earned a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi and a M.Div. degree from Duke University. He has held positions as a faculty member and as a Director of Clinical Training in schools of professional psychology. Areas of special interest in the treatment of adults and older adolescents other than general clinical practice include:

The integration of psychology and religion/spirituality,

Career counseling and assessment,

Grief and bereavement counseling including work with clients who struggle with life threatening medical issues,

Adults abused as children

The training and counseling of graduate students in clinical/counseling psychology.

Mild to severe mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Having a doctoral degree in counseling psychology, a ministerial degree, and an undergraduate degree in biology, Dr. Whitmire tends to take a holistic perspective on client care. He suggests that his way of working with clients is structured according to what in the psychological literature has been called “practice based evidence.” What this means is that he requests and values feedback from clients during almost every session about their perception of the outcome of therapeutic work together and about how they see the therapeutic relationship. With the client Dr. Whitmire evaluates his or her responses and determines the appropriateness of current treatment, the need for further treatment, and whether a clinical consultation is needed if a client is not progressing at an expected rate. In other words, he uses systematic client feedback to tailor treatment and individualize therapy in order to increase therapeutic effectiveness.
