OCF's Behavior Therapy Institutes
The Obsessive Compulsive Foundation will once again be
offering the
Behavior Therapy Institute, a 3-day intensive training
program for
clinicians wanting to learn state-of-the-art psychosocial
treatments for
OCD and related disorders. Dr. Pollard is the clinical
director of the
training program and will serve on the faculty. Programs
are schedule
for September 14-16 in Pittsburgh and November 30-December 2
in

The Forensic Evaluation Division Speaks to Local Lawyers
Dr. Robert Gordon and Dr. Laura Chackes co-presented a webinar at the St. Louis law office of Hinshaw and Culbertson. Other attorneys from their offices in 12 states heard the presentation by phone and viewed the Power Point slides via computer. The presentation was entitled "Malingering...Presence and Impact--Can You Be Sure?
Dr. Gordon and Dr. Rachelle Plummer are scheduled to provide the same presentation to the Clayton, MO law firm of Brinker and Doyen on October 19, 2007. Arrangements are being made to provide presentations regarding criminal, personal injury, and family law cases to other law firms.
All attorneys who attend receive Continuing Legal Education credit from the Missouri Bar Association.

New Men’s Eating Disorders Group Begins in June
This group will meet Thursday mornings from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. at the Chesterfield office and will be facilitated by Randall Flanery, PhD. It is for men with issues such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating and Compulsive Overeating. Men with eating disorders have a different perspective on their issues than women. Addressing these issues with other men will facilitate achieving health in all aspects.

New Book on OCD
A new book entitled Psychological Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is now available from the American Psychological Association. Dr. Pollard wrote the chapter on treatment readiness, ambivalence, and resistance.

Two New Eating Disorders Groups Forming
There are two weekly groups facilitated by a licensed psychologist available for those who would benefit from extra support and skill building in addition to individual therapy sessions. Often talking with others who are experiencing similar difficulties provides help and strength with recovery.
Compulsive Eaters Group: (Mondays from 5-6 p.m.- West County): This group is appropriate for those who overeat as a means of coping with stress. The focus is on learning healthier coping and eating skills. A licensed registered Dietitian will co-facilitate this group for some sessions.
Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa Therapy Group: (Thursday evenings from 5-6 p.m. – West County) This group is appropriate for those who are currently in therapy working to reduce eating disorders symptoms. This group also may be used as follow up to an Intensive Outpatient Eating Disorders Program.

Robert Gordon, PhD Joins SLBMI Staff
Robert Gordon, PhD joined the Institute staff as the Director of Forensic Evaluation Division on May 1, 2007. He said, "I am very excited about this opportunity to provide services in Midwest by expanding the Forensic Evaluation Division and by continuing to provide timely, objective, and quality services."
The Institute forensic staff consists of a team of psychological experts who specialize in evaluating, consulting about, and testifying about children, adolescent and adult cases.
Our services are available for, among others, criminal cases, personal injury cases, and family law cases.

Art Exhibit Opens for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week
As part of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, the St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute's Eating Disorders Program presents the exhibition: "Expressions of Eating Disorders" from February 26 to March 7, 2007, at The Heights (Richmond Heights Community Center) with an opening reception February 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.
This display contains works from art and writing therapy sessions of patients in the Eating Disorders Program at St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute. These images and words convey the reality of living with an eating disorder as well as the hope for recovery.

Additional events include:
Noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27 - A brown bag lunch discussion by psychotherapist Cathy Lander-Goldberg, MSW, LCSW, who will use the works in the exhibit to illustrate the use of expressive therapies in treating clients with eating disorders.
7-8 p.m. on Monday, March 5 - An update on eating disorders. Randall Flanery, PhD, Director of the Eating Disorders Program at St. Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute, will discuss recent developments in the field such as the backlash against overly thin models; insurance changes to make treatment more affordable; and the increased prevalence of eating disorders among men and middle-aged women.
All events are free and will take place at The Heights located at 8001 Dale Ave. 63117 (Just south of Highway 40 off of Hanley Road.) The exhibition and events are offered in cooperation with the Richmond Heights Public Art Program.

Staff to Speak at ADAA
Several members of the SLBMI clinical staff will be speaking at the next meeting of the national Anxiety Disorders Association of America., which will be held in St. Louis, March 29-April 1, 2007. Drs. Margolis, Niemiec, and Aatre-Prashar will be conducting a workshop on treating anxiety disorders in primary care. Additional talks by SLBMI staff will address things anxiety therapists should know about sleep disorders (Dr. Wells) and eating disorders (Dr. Hill).
