Agoraphobia is a pattern of dread or avoidance of multiple situations because of a fear of incapacitation. Sometimes the fear is of specific, sudden symptom episodes like panic attacks, fainting, vomiting, or loss of bladder of bowel control. In other instances, the individual may be unable to specify a specific feared outcome. Situations commonly dreaded by individuals with agoraphobia include being alone, crowds, leaving home, being away from familiar people, traveling, driving, and using public transportation.
Treatment helps most people with phobias; options include medicines, therapy or both. Our Anxiety Disorders Center (ADC) is nationally and internationally recognized.
