Paruresis has also been referred to as shy bladder, bashful bladder, and psychogenic urinary retention. The condition is a form of Social Anxiety Disorder characterized by difficulty urinating in the proximity of others, either in public restrooms or at home when others are near the restroom. Paruresis can significantly interfere with a person’s mobility. Complications can include bladder infection and pain.
